Brogue shoes are distinguished by their unique decorative perforations (or broguing) and serration along the edges of the leather pieces that make up the shoes. Originally designed for outdoor use in the wetlands of Scotland and Ireland, the perforations allowed water to drain from the shoes as wearers walked through damp terrain. The term “brogue” was first used to describe a form of outdoor, country walking shoe in the early 20th century but has since evolved to include various styles of dress shoes that feature decorative broguing. Brogue shoes are available in several types, including the full brogue (also known as wingtips in the United States), semi-brogue, and quarter brogue, each offering a different level of adornment and formality. Full brogues are the most elaborate, featuring a wingtip design that extends down the sides of the shoes, with extensive perforations and serrations. Semi-brogues have broguing along the cap’s seam and in the center of the toe cap, making them slightly less ornate.
