Known as the “Gombegala Ooru” (Toy Town) of Karnataka, Channapatna is a 400-year-old wooden lacquerware craft cluster producing eco-friendly, hand-turned wooden toys, dolls, home décor, and educational games.
The craft was introduced under Tipu Sultan’s patronage in the 18th century, and today, it is GI (Geographical Indication) certified as “Channapatna Toys and Dolls”.
Over 5,000 artisans and 300+ small units sustain this traditional craft, which has gained global recognition for its sustainability and child-safe designs. - Global Positioning:
Channapatna is a UNESCO-recognized craft cluster, exporting eco-friendly toys to Europe, the US, and Japan, aligning with the global shift toward plastic-free, handmade, and sustainable toys.
