Region Specific

Alphonso Mangoes (Ratnagiri–Devgad, Konkan)

Region & GI: The “Hapus” grown along the Konkan coast—especially Ratnagiri & Sindhudurg (Devgad)—is GI-tagged (applications for Ratnagiri & Devgad recorded in India’s GI Registry).

Season (typical window): Late March–June in Konkan, with first arrivals often from late Feb depending on weather (recent seasons saw early flush/heat impacts).

Quality profile & why Konkan matters: Lateritic coastal soils + sea breeze and Konkan’s specific agro-climate are repeatedly linked in agronomic studies to Alphonso’s aroma/sweetness profile (low fibre, saffron-hued pulp).

Export protocols & access:

  • Japan: Only Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) accepted; MSAMB’s VHT facility at Vashi, Navi Mumbai is the public-sector workhorse for Japan shipments.
  • USA: Irradiation at the Mumbai facility; 2025 season had a brief data-logging issue but operations normalized and shipments resumed.

FY24 exports (India, fresh mango): 32,104 MT worth USD 60.14 mn. Top destinations: UAE, UK, USA, Kuwait, Qatar.

Why “Konkan Alphonso” is region-specific (buyer pitch):
GI protection + traceable treatment pathways (VHT/irradiation), and a terroir repeatedly documented in Konkan agronomy literature. For premium SKUs to Japan/US/EU, anchor sourcing to Ratnagiri/Devgad orchards and route via Vashi VHT/irradiation.

Nagpur Oranges (Nagpur “Santara”/Mandarin, Vidarbha)

Region & GI: Nagpur Orange (Mandarin) holds a GI tag covering the Vidarbha region.

Cropping seasons: Two bahars—Ambiya (Sept–Dec) (tarter) and Mrig (Jan–Mar) (sweeter).

Quality & science base: CCRI (ICAR-Central Citrus Research Institute, Nagpur) leads cultivation and quality research for Nagpur Mandarin; NHB notes it as “one of the best mandarins in the world.”

Exports & markets:

  • Exports from India for oranges/mandarins are modest relative to production; NHB notes only ~1.72% of national orange output is exported.
  • Markets include Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, UAE; APEDA/Commerce flagged off a dedicated Nagpur Orange consignment to Dubai with packing at APEDA-funded facilities (Vashi).

Post-harvest & pack: Government profiles specify CFB telescopic cartons (3/5-ply) commonly used for export mandarins, with size/grade norms.

Why “Nagpur” is region-specific (buyer pitch):
The GI tag + Vidarbha’s black soils and distinct Ambiya/Mrig windows deliver recognisable sweetness/acid traits; proximity to APEDA/MSAMB treatment-pack facilities enables compliant UAE/SAARC runs.

Nashik Grapes (Table Grapes cluster, Maharashtra)

Scale & compliance backbone:

  • FY24 India exports (fresh grapes): 343,982 MT, USD 417.07 mn; top destinations Netherlands, UK, UAE, Russia, Bangladesh.
  • GrapeNet (APEDA) = full traceability & residue surveillance to EU requirements (NRCG-coordinated labs; APEDA recognized labs list).
  • Minimum maturity guidance used by export chains references ≥16° Brix and ~20:1 sugar/acid (AGMARK/technical references used industry-wide).

Nashik’s export performance:

  • District exports held at ~1.57 lakh tonnes in 2024-25 season (Nov–May), similar to 2023-24 levels, with ~1.10 lakh t to Europe and ~47,000 t to non-EU in 2024-25.

Why Nashik is region-specific (quality edge):
Longstanding “Grape Capital” status, dense packhouse/cold-chain infra (MSAMB export centers inc. Chandwad, Nashik), and climate with marked day–night swings favours sugars while retaining acids—key for export specs.

Protocols & market access: APEDA’s current table-grape export procedure formalises residue control and certification for EU/other markets (latest circulars).
